SEIU 668
CHAPTER  4

Ironclad:  Stalwart warships of the Civil War.  They stood strong, bound in iron and resolute to the end.

Veteran:  By our service, Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, in peace or in war, we are Veterans.  Bound in service and resolute to the end.

This project is a cooperative effort of the Alle-Kiski CareerLink and other local veterans service providers to connect our area veterans and offer knowledge and info from our individual experiences.  Contributions and questions are always welcomed at borczeck@state.pa.us .  If you have an immediate need or question, please feel free to contact your local veterans representative and they will be able to assist you.

TurboTAP.org   TurboTAP.org is the Department of Defense's official Web site to provide information for servicemembers transitioning from military service. This site is also supported by the Departments of Labor and Veterans Affairs.  TurboTap.org has some great resources that will help you translate your military skills and write your resume that you can access by clicking here.

e-Vets Resource Advisor   The e-VETS Advisor was developed by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (VETS).  It integrates with the National Resource Directory (NRD), a Web-based directory of more than 11,000 national, state and local services and resources for Veterans, Service Members and their families and caregivers.  The NRD is a collaborative effort between the Departments of Defense, Labor and Veterans Affairs.

Pittsburgh Homeless Veterans Stand Down 2010  Did you know?  Roughly 1/3 of homeless adults are veterans…  The number of homeless Vietnam Era Veterans actually exceeds the number of fatalities that occurred during the Vietnam War….  You can help them, we need your help!  Vets, active duty, and civilians can volunteer!

Veterans Leadership Program and affiliates are planning Stand Down 2010.  We are seeking volunteers for a minimum commitment of 2 hours between 8:00am to 6:00pm on August 21, 2010.  Your primary duties… smile, care, and pitch in.  You may even learn of programs that can benefit you and your family!  To volunteer please contact the volunteer Coordinator:  Brian Orczeck: borczeck@state.pa.us  and you will be contacted by myself or an organizer.

Resume Tips:  Get an interview in 4 seconds with a Professional Profile:  This approach replaces your objective statement.  It is your life story… the summation of why you should be hired… in 7 sentences or less.  Once again, it will be the first thing an employer sees after your contact information and should be a professional, concise teaser statement that make them want to know more.  Take my co-worker’s profile for example:

Over twenty years of management, sales, and career counseling experience with Fortune 500 corporations, private companies, and non-profits.

Skilled at effectively communicating across varied socio-economic boundaries… a capable trainer of all employment classes and experience levels.   Experienced motivator, conveying strong coping abilities for sensitive situations and hardships, enabling positive individual transformation and success.  Skilled active listener, well versed in problem mitigation and adaptive resolution.  Excels at instructional presentation and follow-through engagement.

THE WORK-READY VETERAN©

They served their country and are ready to work for you!

Brought to you by your Alle-Kiski PA CareerLink®

The services we offer are Federally-funded and available at no cost to you or the employer.

Here’s how it works:  (Everyone who receives The Ironclad is encouraged to participate even if you are employed.)

1.      Each month interested vets can contact me at borczeck@state.pa.us and request to be placed on the Work-Ready Veteran job-seeker board.  The general list for the 10 monthly slots is filled on a first come-first served basis with each month getting new veterans posted.

2.      I will contact each vet that contacts me and we will set an appointment date and time to come into the AK CareerLink and review your case and tailor our services to your needs. You will then be listed in the “The Work-Ready Veteran” on a space available basis.

3.      If I run out of slots on the monthly list, I will still contact you for an appointment and provide you with equal services and time.  Although you might not be in “The Work-Ready Veteran” for that month, we will still be actively referring you to employers whose available jobs fit your resume.

4.      All other Vets…  this is where we need you!  If you know of a job, click the blue number to send the opportunity to me.  I’ll work to get the vet into the job.  If the link is broken just email me @ borczeck@state.pa.us and include the veteran’s ID # in the subject box.

5.      Remember, we are all Veterans.  We all served our country and served as a team, squad, flight, etc…  We don’t go it alone, as a team we are powerful!  I invite you to join in, you can make a difference for the U.S. Vet!
