Your Montgomery G.I. Bill in Brief

 

CURRENT (2009) MGIB RATE TABLES

Programs of the Pre-9/11 G.I. Bill                

 

Chapter 30:    The MGIB program provides up to 36 months of education benefits. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses.

Example:  I am currently enrolled in a 2-year MGIB Apprenticeship program approved by the PA State Approving AgencyYou have 1 year from the start of your employment to enroll for an apprenticeship program.  After you enroll, the regional Veterans Education Advisor can meet with your employer and helped establish a functional training program.  It’s a great program to develop the skills you need to be a great employee.

***  If you are eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill—Active Duty (Chapter 30), VEAP (Chapter 32), or Dependents Educational Assistance (Chapter 35), MGIB-SR (Chapter 1606), or REAP (Chapter 1607), you may receive this benefit.

 

Chapter 1606:            Reserve and Guard w/6-year enlistment.  The MGIB-SR program may be available to you if you are a member of the Selected Reserve.  This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances.

 

Chapter 1607 (REAP):         Reserve and Guard w/6-year enlistment and spent 90 consecutive days on active duty post 9/11.

 

Chapter 31:   The Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) Program is authorized by Congress under Title 38.   The VetSuccess program assists Veterans with service-connected disabilities to prepare for, find, and keep suitable jobs. VetSuccess also offers programs to improve severely disabled vets ability to live independently.

 

Chapter 34:    Chapter 34 provided education benefits to individuals who served on Active Duty after January 31st, 1955 and prior to January 1st, 1977. The benefit expired on December 31st, 1989. This benefit was  authorized the conversion from the Vietnam Era G.I. Bill to the Montgomery G.I. Bill. This conversion enabled many Vietnam Era veterans to qualify for benefits under Chapter 30 with a slightly increased benefit amount.  (Click here for current benefit amount.)

 

Chapter 35 (DEA):   Spouses or children of veteran who became deceased during active duty.

OR

                        Spouse or Children of Veteran who is 100% disabled due to Service-Connected Disability.

 

Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP):         VEAP is available if you elected to make contributions from your military pay to participate in this education benefit program. Your contributions are matched on a $2 for $1 basis by the Government.  You may use these benefits for degree, certificate, correspondence, apprenticeship/on-the-job training programs, and vocational flight training programs.

Chapter 33 (Post 9/11 GI BILL)

 

Eligibility: At least 90 cumulative days to 36 months of Title 10 active duty after 9/11.  If you are eligible for Chapter 33 Post 9/11 MGIB you are also eligible for Chapter 30 MGIB.

 

                        Veterans can combine Chapter 33 and Chapter 30 for a total of 48 months of eligibility.

 

POST 9/11 G.I. Bill:  Covers all or part of the tuition charged by a degree granting institution.

A living allowance is also paid to the beneficiary when attending a degree granting institution.

 

Post-9/11 Bill will pay up to the maximum tuition of the school with the highest tuition rates in the applicant state.

 

POST 9/11 G.I. Bill: Can NOT be utilized for OJT or Apprenticeship programs or non-degree earning

  technical education programs

 

Benefit amounts:       Pro-rated on a active duty basis i.e.… 90 days active duty = 40% benefit eligibility

                                                                                                     36 months active duty = Full benefit eligibility

 

Veteran or Servicemember with Chapter 33 benefit eligibility may transfer eligibility to his/her spouse or child. 

*** Rule: Additional service commitments may apply to reach the minimum 10 year service commitment.

The Yellow Ribbon Program:       If you are enrolled at a Yellow Ribbon participating institution and the tuition and fees exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition or fees, additional funds may be available for your education program without an additional charge to your entitlement.

If you are uncertain of your program eligibility just Apply for GI Bill Benefits.  You will then receive a paper printout of your actual eligibility.

 

Veterans with dual eligibility for Chapter 30 and Chapter 33 must chose their best option to facilitate their educational goals.  Please review the Benefits Comparison Chart to make your best determination.
